Taylor Carter, daughter of Melvalett Carter, will begin her third year of college this fall as a vocal performance major at Ball State University. She is a singer and youth leader at All Nations church and has performed the roles of Christine in Phantom of the Opera and Fantine in Les Misérables. Taylor currently serves as a Disney Dreamers Academy champion ambassador – one of five in the nation. She competed in the national NAACP ACT-SO classical voice division and appeared on the Steve Harvey television show this year discussing her dreams. Taylor is a dancer at South Shore Dance Alliance, where she is studying jazz, modern, ballet, tap and hip hop. She thanks God for her gifts and says, “Though I started singing so late, I’m very grateful to my high school choir teacher, Mrs. Reinhart, for molding my voice and believing in me.”

Singing is the passion and love of Brandon Dickson. He obtained the love of country music from and was inspired to create and perform his own music by his “papaw,” who was a musician. Two of his favorite country artists are George Jones and Travis Tritt. A graduate of South Central High School, Brandon is a sports and Ultimate Fighting Championship enthusiast and enjoys going to concerts and spending time with his family. He performed at the Blueberry Festival and is a karaoke contest winner. Brandon’s dream is to perform his own songs while traveling the world. He dedicates this evening’s performance to the memory of his “papaw” and hopes to make him proud.

Mandalyn Early began singing at the very young age of three. Throughout her middle and high school years she won many awards, some of which led her to competitions located in Canada and Florida’s Disney World. She has been trained in and has a great respect for many genres of music. For ten years she has been the front and lead vocalist for a local band named Nawty. This group has performed throughout northwest Indiana, giving Mandy the opportunities to open up for Survivor, play a post Pat Benatar party, as well as open for Uncle Kracker this past August. A few years ago she competed in the Colgate Country Showdown, where she won the opportunity to record a demo in Nashville, Tennessee. She is looking forward to Hoosier STAR and the experience of some friendly competition. Mandalyn would like to give a special thanks to her bandmates, friends and family for all their love and support.

A 2007 graduate of La Porte High School, Sarah Gorecki performed the leads in Annie at age 9 at La Porte Little Theatre and Beauty and the Beast in Michigan City’s Young People’s Theatre in 2007. She also performed in Footloose, The Women, Frankenstein, Peter Pan, The Sound of Music and Rocky Horror Picture Show. Sarah was Miss Duneland’s Outstanding Teen in 2005, the first Miss Indiana’s Outstanding Teen and placed top 10 at Miss America’s Outstanding Teen. After high school, she lived in California for three years as a singer/songwriter for various artists and record companies. She has recorded four albums since the age of 12. Sarah has sung for various politicians, musicians and professional sporting events, including the Indianapolis Colts – a dream she would not have attained without Dan Bigg (thank you!)  Last spring she graduated from DePaul University with a double major in Journalism and Psychology. She was the Director of Special Events for DemonTHON, a yearlong fundraiser for Ann and Robert H. Lurie Children’s Hospital in Chicago and was the vice president of Sponsorship for The Young Irish Fellowship of Chicago, a non-profit raising money for Ignite the Spirit Fund and My Mary Cate. Sarah received a grant for undergraduate research for The Cities Project, a non-profit that serves to provide mentoring and coping support for adolescents in the Englewood community. She continues to mentor with the program and is the co-leader of the grant writing and fundraising team. She served many positions in her sorority, Delta Zeta, and is now attending Loyola University Law School.

Jenny Hartson has been in love with music since she was very young. As the Hoosier STAR 2007 Youth Division winner, she has been afforded the opportunity and pleasure to perform with the La Porte County Symphony Orchestra on several occasions. She is delighted to be joining them this evening once again. Jenny also had the pleasure of performing alongside musicians such as John McLaughlin, Randy Travis, and The North American Brass Company. She attended Berklee College of Music after graduating from La Porte High School in 2008. Due to finding her love for retail, Jenny has delayed pursuing a career in music. She currently works for Levi Strauss & Co. Jenny’s appreciation for vocals spreads throughout several genres, but recently she has fallen in love with the sultry sounds of the 50s. She hopes you enjoy a trip down memory lane with her performance this evening.

Delshawn Taylor is a junior Psychology major on the premed track at Indiana University South Bend. He has been singing since the fourth grade. He has musically directed, accompanied, and vocally coached 10 musical productions held at The South Bend Civic Theatre and local high schools. He has performed lead roles with Opera Notre Dame, Saint Mary’s opera and the University of Evansville Opera. As a composer, Delshawn has written music for plays, instrumentalists and adult and children’s choirs. After the success of his first commission title “In Remembrance,” he recently received a second commission as a composer in Atlanta, Georgia this summer, which will premiere in November of 2016. He has been mentored by Maestro Tsung Yeh of the South Bend Symphony, Thomas Wilkins of the Omaha Symphony and Dr. Marvin Curtis, Dean of the Ernestine Raclin School of the Arts. Most importantly, Delshawn recently started a children’s choir with the Boys and Girls Club as a way to give back to the kids – the same way so many musical experts have seeded into his life. He hopes that he can make a great impact in their lives and inspire a burning passion for music and the arts in their hearts. He would like to thank his loving family for their support and encouragement in his quest to always excel in the fine arts. He also extends great appreciation to his amazing voice teacher, Paula Harris, for inspiring him to sing.
